A literature review is given on the field of electrocatalysis of the carbon anode reaction in aluminium electrolysis. An experimental study was conduted on the anodic overvoltage of graphite anodes with an additive consisting of Mg-Al oxide. Results obtained in saturated cryolite-alumina melts at 1010 ℃ showed a certain electrocatalytic effect, the reduction in anodic overvoltage at 0.8 A/cm~2 being 35 mV in average.
