South Africa's new aluminium smelter, the ALUSAF Hillside Smelter in Richards Bay is the first smelter in the world (fig. 1) where two 315 kA potlines and the associated process control systems have been erected at the same time in a single project. Each of the two potlines comprises 288 AP30 pots and has a nominal DC current rating of 315 kA. The ALUSAF Hillside Smelter has a total output of approximately 470,000 tons of aluminium per year. The main power supply system, comprising a 132 kV indoor substation and 12 transformer rectifier groups together with all the necessary automation equipment, was designed and supplied by the Siemens Industrial and Building Systems Group. Installation and commissioning was carried out by Siemens Ltd South Africa.
