Oxidation of an aluminium-5% magnesium alloy was studied at 1123 K in humid air. An in situ observation cell was developed to observe the surface morphology variations during oxidation. The device allowed to skim or cast the molten metal in order to study oxidation from a clean metal surface. Liquid state oxidation was described and consistent explanations proposed.
