Milling experiments on an aluminium alloy were carried out using a laboratory-designed diamond endmill. Aluminium alloys are important materials used in the fields of aerospace and die/mold production, where surfaces ma-chined to high precision are re-quired. Conventional machining of aluminium alloys generally re-sults in a short tool life, poor surface quality, and unsatisfacto-ry edge flnishing, because of the formation of built-up edge and burrs. Aluminium components therefore require flnishing pro-cesses, such as polishing or lap-ping, after machining. A machining technology for aluminium alloy surfaces that produces no built-up edge and gives good surface roughness and good edge ftnishing, would be a great asset in many industries. The experi-mental results obtained show that mirror-finish machining with no built-up edge of the aluminium alloy is possible with a diamond endmill and a high-speed spin-dle.
