The calculated market deficit for primary aluminium was 849,000 tonnes in 2014, which follows a surplus of 569,000 tonnes recorded for the whole of 2013. Demand for primary aluminium for 2014 was 50.55m tonnes, 3.493m tonnes more than a year earlier. Production in 2014 rose by 2.075m tonnes year-on-year. Total stocks held in the four exchanges in London, Shanghai, USA and Tokyo were 4.415m tonnes at year-end, which was 1.163m tonnes below the end-2013 total. Global producer stocks at the end of 2014 were 1.408m tonnes, which was 239,000 tonnes above the previous year's close.
