There was much talk last year about the all-new, aluminium intensive Ford F-150 pickup truck, which was finally launched at the beginning of 2015. Some criticised Ford for adopting a risky strategy in switching from steel to an aluminium body, others praised the company for its courage; and the aluminium industry itself rejoiced: the new F-150 is seen as a 'game changer' that marks the beginning of dramatic growth for aluminium in the auto sector. The general perception is that automakers are increasingly choosing aluminium as a cost-effective way to improve the performance, safety, durability and fuel efficiency of their vehicles.
