Mining giant Rio Tinto seems to be back on the road to success. 2014 net profit rose by 78% to USD6.5bn. By increasing volumes and reducing costs, the company achieved underlying earnings of USD9.3bn and reduced net debt by 31% to USD12.5bn. "Our aluminium division has grown into a significant contributor to group earnings and cash flow," said chief executive Sam Walsh. With underlying earnings of USD1.2bn, the aluminium business, represented by Rio Tinto Alcan, outpaced copper. The Aluminium division is now second behind Iron Ore, which still represents 87% of total earnings.
