The world's largest mining group BHP Billiton has announced that it wants to sell off its aluminium division (besides its manganese and nickel business) and concentrate in future on the sectors of iron ore, copper, coal and oil. Potash too will be retained as the fifth wheel of the wagon. With the remaining business the management hopes to take a leap forward in terms of profitability and cash flow. A first success of this 'portfolio simplification', as BHP has characterised its step, appeared directly: on the London stock exchange the share price increased immediately.
