Higher power costs, ambitious climate and environmental policy and other regulatory interventions impacting Europe's economy are restricting the international competitiveness of European industry as a whole and Europe's aluminium sector in particular. Meanwhile the European Commission has recognised the industry's importance for growth and employment and is arguing for a reinforcement of industry in Europe. The aim: by 2020 the industry should represent 20 percent of Europe's GDP. At the Aluminium 2014 Fair in Duesseldorf ALUMINIUM spoke with Gerd Goetz, director general of the European Aluminium Association (EAA) about this ambition, the competitive situation of the aluminium industry in Europe and policy expectations.
