There has been an enormous boom in new plants for rolled aluminium products in China in recent years. The country's domestic consumption rose from 2.1 to 5.2 million tonnes between 2005 and 2011 and is expected to grow to 6.9 million tonnes by 2014; China now accounts for a third of the world's production of flat aluminium products like foil, strip and plate. Production is attributable to a barely ascertainable number of mostly smaller, regional plants that exclusively use Chinese plant technology to produce rolled products that meet quality standards that are acceptable in the country.
