Aluminium flagship Alcoa has announced it will close or curtail about 531,000 tonnes (12%) of its global smelting capacity, to lower its position on the global aluminium cost curve and improve competitiveness. The company will permanently close its smelter in Tennessee, which was curtailed in 2009, along with two of the six idled potlines at its Rockdale smelter in Texas.
