The main goal of this article is to provide an overview of the Brazilian aluminium industry. It pays attention to its economic importance, the production structure and the pattern of demand. Total revenues of the Brazilian aluminium industry enlarged from USD9.4bn in 2005 to USD16.6bn in 2008 (Graph 1). However, due to the global economic crisis, this amount diminished to USD12.7bn in 2009, recovering partially to USD14.7bn in 2010. Despite the nominal growth, the aluminium industry has been losing relevance along the examined period, as its participation in the GDP reduced from 1.1% in 2005 to 0.7% in 2010. In the same direction, its slice in the industrial production also dropped 4.1% to 3.1%, respectively.
