Weight is a big factor in the challenge to reduce both fuel consumption and CO_2 emissions of cars. Aluminium plays a key role as it enables weight to be reduced significantly, especially in the body-in-white. To achieve its target of lightweight design, BMW worked closely with Novelis to develop a multi-alloy aluminium solution based on the company's 'Fusion' casting technology.rnThe use of aluminium has increased significantly in recent years, with applications such as bonnets where about 20 percent of European cars now use aluminium. However, aluminium utilisation in doors is still very low, because of the technical demands. With doors accounting for approx. 20 percent of the total body-in-white weight, there is significant opportunity for weight-saving.
