From 29 to 31 March 2009 the trade fair 'ALUMINIUM Dubai 2009', modelled by its organisers Reed Exhibitions Deutschland on the leading aluminium fair in Essen, took place in Dubai for the first time. The aim of the fair was to bring together exhibitors from abroad and local operators and potential investors to exchange views on prospects and possibilities for a further extension of the aluminium industry in the Gulf States and their neighbouring regions. Along with a conference of the 'Gulf Aluminium Association' organised during the same week in Dubai by MEED (Middle East Business Intelligence), a technical week on aluminium took place which highlighted the growing importance of aluminium in the Gulf region andrnindeed throughout the Middle East including North Africa, abbreviated to MENA (Middle East North Africa), and brought it to the forefront of public consciousness. This gave the incentive for this journal to take a closer look at the present position and perspectives of the aluminium industry in the Gulf region.
