Rio Tinto Alcan may cut output at some smelters due to market weakness, and announced lower-than-ex-pected production at its Gove alumina refinery. The company is not considering closing any smelters, but is looking at delaying relining some pots, so the cuts will be more gradual than by shutting whole potlines. But increases elsewhere will offset the impact of those cuts. The ramp up of the 250,000 tpy Sohar Aluminium smelter started in June and is expected to reach full output by the end of this year. Alsornpotlines at Anglesey Aluminium will restart following the fire in the summer, and the Tiwai Point smelter in New Zealand is returning to full production capacity. Tiwai Point reduced output due to low rainfall, but expects to restore full power within eight to ten weeks, and the restart of Anglesey is well underway. Some 80% of Rio's aluminium smelters are in the bottom half of the cost curve and are operating at a profit.
