In the extrusion industry developments in machine and plant technology over the past years have contributed to the realisation of previously hardly conceivable product applications. That this has been possible, is the fruit of constructive collaboration between industry, universities and non-university research facilities. The status of that collaboration is documented on a regular basis at the Extrusion Symposium of the German Metallurgical Society (DGM). The subjects covered at these events range from process technology and the development of materials, through product applications to simulation techniques and further processing. Below, a number of lecture topics covered at the DGM Symposium held in Weimar in October 2006 are discussed.
