The Fjardaal ("Aluminum of the Fjords") Smelter at Reydarfjoerdur in Eastern Iceland will be the first new primary aluminum facility built by Alcoa in 20 years. The production capacity will be 322 000 tpy; the first hot metal is scheduled in April 2007. The project represents one of the largest private-sector investments in Iceland's history, and the smelter will be one of the cleanest aluminum production facilities in the world.
