With the help of a newly developed method Kemptener ESK Ceramics has improved the material properties of titanium diboride (TiB{sub}2) still further. The resulting material could create attractive optimisation potentials for the aluminium-producing industry. Titanium diboride is resistant to cryolite melts and can be wetted very well by aluminium. Titanium diboride is one of the hardest known materials of all. It is also noted for its high strength and toughness and its excellent high-temperature resistance. Another particular material property of titanium diboride is its high thermal conductivity of 53 W/mK at 30℃. The material is also resistant to most chemical substances and can be wetted very well by molten metals such as aluminium and zinc.
