Besides laser cutting, laser welding has now become firmly established as a processing technology in the aluminium sector. Its advantage is low heat input by the narrowly focused beam. Compared with conventional welding methods this minimises component distortion and corrective finishing work. Laser welding is also noted for high working speeds along with excellent process reliability. The advantages of lasers are used in numerous branches, for example the laser welding of automobile bodies, aircraft and vehicle components, rail vehicles and in shipbuilding. Lasers are also used in the production of aluminium sections.
