The introduction of aluminium technology into ever more numerous areas of transport technology involves the development of new joining methods. The brazing of aluminium with locally acting heat sources offers enormous potential for widespread industrial implementation. To satisfy specific requirements relating to high strength and the. lowest possible solidus temperature, new Al/Si-base brazing alloys containing Cu, Sn, Mg and Ag have been developed (table 1). The processing properties of prototype wires were investigated in plasma brazing tests on 1.5 mm thick AA6016 T4 sheets forming lap joints. The wires, supplied by the company Brazetec, were 1.2 mm in diameter. The current source used was a EWM 450 AC/ DCP (f= 125 Hz, I=42 A) unit in combination with an Abiplas Weld 100 W plasma torch. Wire feed was by the pull-through method using a Binzel Abicor APD (wire feed rate v_D = 1.2 m/min, joining rate v_B> 0.1 m/min). Fig. 1 shows an example of a brazed lap joint with minimal mixing.
