Aluminio Argentina SAIC (Aluar) has granted Areva the turnkey contract to modernize the electrical substation of its first two electrolysis potlines. Aluar is the only primary aluminium producer in Argentina. It is a company with national capital whose shares are quoted on the Buenos Aires stock exchange. The smelter is located in Puerto Madryn, Patagonia. The first two pot-lines A and B, based on 150 kA pots, were commissioned in 1974, and are powered by an Areva DC substation. In 1999 Aluar commissioned a third potline of 144 pots, 183 kA, powered by Areva. Thanks to the continuous development efforts of Aluar, the potline technology has been considerably improved, the pot control system replaced by a new one so that now the A and B potlines are ready to work at 200 kA.
