Heat treatment and impact toughness properties of AlMgSi foundry alloys

An investigation of the effect of variations in chemical composi-tion and heat treatment of AlMgSi foundry alloys was carried out. Material prepared by unidirec-tional gravity casting was ma-chined to CharpyV specimens and subjected to micro structural investigations, hardness testing and impact toughness testing. The alloys were studied in as cast condition, directly aged at 150℃, T4 temper obtained by solution heat treat the material at 540℃-560℃ and T6 temper obtained by solution heat treatment and sub-sequently aging at 150℃.The Vickers hardness varied only slightly with Variation in chemical composition (Mn, Mg and Si). However, somewhat higher hardness was obtained for the alloy with high Si content when it was solution heat treated and aged at 150℃. The toughness was signisscantly reduced for material having a high volume of intermetallic particles, but only slightly affected by heat treatment.
