VAI Clecim, member of the Austrian VA Tech group was the first company to introduce the front loading concept for extrusion presses more than 25 years ago. During this time the company has built and sold many presses all over the world, all of them of the front loading type. One of the latest references of VAI Clecim is a 35/40 MN direct compact press with piercer for extrusion of tubes made from copper and copper based alloys which also will open new opportunities for VAI Clecim to enter the market for extrusion of aluminium tubes. VAI Clecim is successfully concentrating its activities on the high value-added market of extrusion presses with extrusion forces >25 MN. In this segment with growing global importance the company currently has built a number of presses, all of them being of front loading compact press design: Din 2003 Erbsloh Aluminium in Germany installed a 44 MN extrusion press for its new production line for curved extrusions. This press uses billets 254 mm in dia with a length of 1 500 mm. The die stack size is 650 mm X 700 mm. In the same year an even bigger press with an extrusion force of 55 MN and a weight of 455 t was installed at Impol Aluminium Industry in Slovenia for the extrusion of hard aluminium alloys. The press is automatically fed with billets 282 mm dia. X 1 500 mm length, the die stack size is 650 mm X 650 mm. Din 2004 the company commissioned a press with an extrusion force of a 28 MN at Muskita Aluminium Industries in Cyprus for the production of architectural and industrial aluminium systems. Billet size is 203 mm X 1 200 mm, die stack size is 450 mm X 450 mm (fig. 1). The press control is by PLC and by man-machine-inter-face.
