At The Beacon High School in New York City, all seniors, regardless of their scientific proclivity or interest, completed original science research projects as a graduation requirement. In addition to this research-quality standard, the research paper was a major formative and summative assessment component (also, technical writing is a very useful transferable skill). The four themes that can be used to scaffold the successful completion of unique science research by each student are: * hypothesis building and fostering experimental design * supporting student research * communicating and organizing a science project * science project assessment.
