While lower oil and gas prices are an economic stimulus for consumers and a variety of other industries, they have started to hurt some segments of the crane sector. John Skelly found evidence of this in his article about crane sales by North American auction companies. The oil and gas industry is flush with cranes, he reports, especially rough terrain cranes. Ritchie Bros, recently sold 34 cranes at an auction in Casper, WY, where it sold the crane fleet of Energy Transportation, which was recently acquired by NC Energy. Skelly reports that while infrastructure construction is on the increase, the oil and gas sector has flooded the market with cranes. Auction companies are bracing for softer used crane prices, but they say there is always an appetite for good, late-model cranes.
