Barnhart became a part of the cleanup of the Washington Closure Hanford site when it was contracted to remove, transport and dispose of an experimental plutonium reactor (309 Reactor) and a highly contaminated vault (340 Vault) in Area 300 of the Hanford site. The units were taken to an engineered land fill known as the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF), located about 30 miles from Area 300. Engineering began in January 2012 and the final piece was set at the ERDF in February 2014. Both the reactor and the vault were located below grade, meaning they would have to be lifted to the surface. The highly radioactive reactor had to be removed concurrently with its 5-foot thick shielding structure as one large monolith. Special lifting and transportation securement devices had to be designed, fabricated and tested. The 1,000 ton loads then were transported to the ERDF. The 309 Reactor could not be disassembled due the high radiation levels, and because it was constructed in place, there were no means to attach rigging. The bio-shield was not connected to the reactor and the lifting method had to include a means of lifting both the shield wall and reactor simultaneously. The weight of both exceeded 2 million pounds. The dimensions were 28 feet in diameter and 21 feet tall.
