The average CCO certified crane operator is 43 years old holds about three certifications, meaning the operator is certified on up to three classes of cranes or holds another certification, such as lift planner, rigger or crane inspector. After 20 years of certifying crane operators, the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) has gathered a wealth of data on the 110,000 individuals who are certified crane operators. Excluding recertifications, NCCCO has issued 240,000 certifications since testing began in 1996. NCCCO Chief Executive Officer Graham Brent and his team have begun parsing the data. The demographics will become much clearer after 2017 when crane operator certification becomes a federal mandate.
