Landstar was formed in 1988 through the acquisition of several trucking companies. As the corporate parent to a number of transportation companies, including Landstar Ranger, Inc., Landstar Inway, Inc. and Landstar Ligon, Inc., Landstar System, Inc. became a publicly held company in March 1993. Landstar companies do not own or operate a fleet of trucks, but instead contract with independent owner/operators to provide capacity to freight customers. Landstar's independent sales agents are primarily responsible for generating business from shippers and coordinating freight transportation.
