In 30 years of nosocomial infection surveil- lance, several issues have remained unchanged. An understanding of the epidemiology of nosoco- Mial infections is a requirement for their control And their prevention. Such an understanding Requires good data about the incidence of such Infections. Definitions of the infections (the Numerator) and of the populations at specific risk (the denominator) will remain central to the valid- ity of data.
