This paper is a review of lithostratigraphic and structural data from southern Quebec and western Maine. The principal new assumption is that a significant part of Taconian deformations was related to the obduction of a large ophiolitic nappe now outcropping on both sides of the Connecticut Valley-Gaspe trough. This hypothesis is consistent with: (1) the correlation of the sedimentary covers of the southern Quebec and western Maine ophiolites, (2) the fact that the Baie Verte-Brompton Line does not represent the root zone of ophiolitic rocks, and (3) the structural analysis, indicating that earliest deformations occurred only in the continental margin rocks. The important along-strike variations in ophiolite genesis and emplacement along the orogen are attributed to the initial geometry of the continental margin.
