The international exploration, drilling and production arena offers tremendous opportunities for independent oil and gas companies to grow. However, attaining success requires a focus on a few key principles.rnFirst and foremost, the interests of host governments must be aligned with the needs of industry participants. Fiscal terms must be balanced with prospectivity and the technical risks of the particular jurisdiction. Host legal systems must be stable; investors require confidence in contract sanctity to make the long-term, capital-intensive investments required.rnTransparent and efficient access to data and land is required to efficiently execute on exploration and development projects. Finally, and by default, an environment with active deal flow allows a variety of participants to grow through efficient management of portfolios, enabling both divestments and acquisitions as companies mature.rnIndependent oil and gas companies have succeeded, and are continuing to succeed, in the international arena, but in those jurisdictions where host governments recognize the value and impact of the independent oil and gas player, and have created environments for their mutual success.
