More than a decade ago, I suggested the Inter-net was three to five years from being an effective marketing tool. I wrote that investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in a content site or millions on a transactional site would be like flushing money down a toilet. Techies protested I didn't know what I was talking about, and that I wasn't willing to accept new technology. Later, Bill Gates' book, "The Road Ahead," echoed my warnings about jumping on the Internet bandwagon too quickly. He agreed the Internet was not yet ready for prime time. (Interestingly, there was not a word from those techies after the Gates book was published.) Today, it's another story. The Internet has become a viable marketing and communications vehicle. Creating an effective site to communicate with customers and prospects has become very affordable. And while virtually every industry organization has an online prescence, some are great and others are disasters.
