摘要

Amain purpose of science is to seek out things that are not well understood, and then to find ways to strengthen our understanding of them. This process is part of what makes the work so much fun: We get to explore and build up, discovery by discovery, increasingly detailed knowledge of the natural world. Throughout my career as a biologist, I've explored many topics, including the structure of DNA, methods of designing new drugs, and the amazing molecular mechanisms used by viruses and bacteria. In every case, I have used art to strengthen and deepen these explorations.
