The authors say, "Our target audience is nonspecialist text-mining practitioners-analysts who have the technical expertise to handle challenges involving text but have limited experience or background with text processing." This statement should set reader expectations for the content of this book and the authors' treatment of the subject. In Chapter I, "The History of Text Mining," the authors find the roots of text mining in areas such as information retrieval, library science, information theory, and natural language processing. More recently, advances in information extraction and information discovery have enabled both data mining and text mining.
