Nonlinear Regression With R is a brief and narrowly focused book in Springer's "Use R!" series. Its audience is practitioners, and its goal is to introduce R's capabilities for nonlinear regression modeling rather than to introduce the topic of nonlinear regression itself. In fact, in the preface, the authors write that their book "is not a textbook on nonlinear regression" but nevertheless they expect it to be "useful as a stand-alone, self-study text for the experimenter or researcher who already has some experience with R and... is familiar with linear regression and related basic statistical concepts" (p. VI). This is a very fine line to try to walk, and the authors attempt to do so by being brief, focusing on examples to illustrate R commands, and limiting their scope. To a large degree, they are successful. The information about nonlinear regression methodology and advice on how to use it is, for the most part, accurate and useful; the examples are novel and effective at illustrating the methods and software; and the authors provide enough information for practitioners who have little prior experience with nonlinear regression to begin to fit simple nonlinear models and draw inferences from them.
