An Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis by R. Lyman Ott and Michael Longnecker has been used for years in graduate classes across the nation to teach introductory statistics to nonmajors. In 1983, Abeles reviewed the first edition of this text. She concluded that, because of Ott's emphasis on fundamental concepts rather than on a detailed exposition, the student comes away with considerable statistical "common sense" and the knowledge to correctly implement statistical techniques in his/her own discipline.
