Statistical Learning From a Regression Perspective (SLRP) contains much of the material found in Elements of Statistical Learning (ESL) by Hastie, Tib-shirani, and Friedman (2009) and attempts to make it accessible to "practitioners in the social, biomedical and ecological sciences." There is certainly a need for such a book. While there have been many interesting advances in the general field of data mining from not only statistics, but also machine learning, computer science, and artificial intelligence, much of that literature is not accessible to practitioners, especially those without an extensive statistics background.
