The beneficial role of the presence of a manganese oxide (MnO_x(s)) coating on water plant filter media in promoting efficient soluble manganese (Mn) has been known for over 30 years. Such coatings allow water utilities to produce finished water with Mn concentrations well below the secondary MCL for Mn. This removal process requires the presence of free chlorine in the filter-applied water to promote ongoing regeneration of the MnO_x(s) surface. Many water utilities with MnO_x(s)-coated filter media have sought to convert to biofiltration for achieving other water treatment objectives. This involves the cessation of free chlorine addition to the media. A significant number of these utilities have observed substantial increases in the finished water Mn concentration after stopping free chlorine addition, resulting in consumer complaints about water discoloration.
