摘要

In the United Kingdom, a large proportion of customer complaints about water quality are related to discoloration (i.e., red, brown, black water). For example, in 2012 38% of all complaints in England and Wales were related to discoloration. Discoloration can be caused by a variety of inorganic and organic compounds that result in turbidity or color that is high enough to be noticed by customers. Inorganic compounds of concern for discoloration include iron and manganese, which can originate from the source water or can be released from the pipe wall due to corrosion reactions or hydraulic events. With many distribution systems still predominantly composed of iron-based pipe materials, direct iron release and resulting discoloration is often simplistically related directly to the pipes. In reality, however, there are complex changes and interactions in water quality throughout the system involving chemistry, microbiology, and hydraulic conditions.
