USEPA method 415.3: Quantifying TOC, DOC, and SUVA

The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has developed a reproducible method that supports the monitoring requirements found in the Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproducts Rule (D/DBPR). Method 415.3 provides for the quantification of total organic carbon (TOC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in source waters and drinking waters, as well as the determination of specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) at 254 nm, protocols for inorganic carbon interference removal, and DOC filter evaluation and selection. During method development experiments, five instrument types were used to determine TOC, DOC, and SUVA for seven source waters. Mean values for DOC, TOC, and SUVA ranged from 0.42 to 3.38 mg/L, 0.42 to 3.64 mg/L, and 1.95 to 3.37 L/mg-m, respectively, with pooled fortified recoveries of 102.7±1.8%. The data generated using method 415.3 showed improved accuracy and precision when compared with existing methods. This method was ultimately approved as part of the Stage 2 D/DBPR.
