Water systems are probably the utility sector that the general public takes for granted most. Day after day, water utilities typically provide reliable potable supplies in the amounts and at the times required by customers. Utilities can be sensitive to extreme weather conditions such as prolonged droughts, which may stress supplies, or significantly wet peak-use periods, which may result in lower-than-budgeted sales and revenues. But with adequate reserves and drought management plans in place, water utilities can usually avoid the disruptions that severe storms often cause with electricity service or the jump in rates that severe cold weather can bring about for natural gas.
