The Atlanta-Fulton County Water Treatment Plant, located in Alpharetta, Ga., is one of the largest water treatment facilities in the state of Georgia. Operated by USFilter, which manages 550 plants throughout the United States and treats 40 bgd (151 GL/d), the plant was awarded the Water Treatment Plant of the Year in 2003 by the Georgia Water and Pollution Control Association (GWPCA). Before September 11, 2001, the Atlanta- Fulton Water Commission (AFWC) had already made an official decision to simplify management of its mechanical hardware system. Pre-911 problems included multiple lock changes because of office relocations and the tedious task of maintaining key and lock inventories on a regular basis. "911 was a big factor in increasing security at the plant," according to Terry Jones, assistant manager for USFilter, which is now a facility that stays on top of the latest technology.
