The East Shoshone County Water District (ESCWD) in the historic Silver Valley mining region of northern Idaho was faced with filtering its five surface water sources to comply with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). ESCWD hired an engineer to evaluate the available options— avoid filtration by converting to a groundwater source or filter the surface water sources' using a technology that would fit ESCWD's site and water quality limitations while meeting the current and anticipated requirements of the Enhanced and Interim Surface Water Treatment Rules.
