During his presidency, Abraham Lincoln traveled to the front 11 times for a total of 42 days. He wanted to greet the soldiers and meet with his generals. He also wanted to escape Washington. Those visits helped him manage the war and improved his frame of mind. His longest trip-from March 24 to April 8,1865-is the subject of Noah Andre Trudeau's well-researched and crisply written book.
