The USS Cairo disappeared under the waters of the Yazoo River in 1862, not to be seen again until National Park Service historian Ed Bearss and two associates found it nearly 100 years later. In the early 1960s, they led the effort to raise the ironclad. The first portion to be recovered was the pilothouse. "As this relic from another age emerged from the river in the twilight, shivers ran down my spine," Bearss recalled. "At no moment of my life have I felt greater awe." Finally, late in 1964, the remains of the Cairo-and its contents-were recovered from the mud that had preserved them for more than a century. They're now on display at the Vicksburg National Military Park. Bearss is now chief historian emeritus for the National Park Service, having retired in 1995.
