1. As the coronavirus outbreak continues to expand, risks of disruptions to the global food supply chain are rising, from production to trade. 2. Some countries could resort to trade restrictions or aggressive stockpiling in a bid to safeguard food security, which could quickly escalate and support grain and oilseed prices. 3. A number of key suppliers, such as Vietnam, Kazakhstan and Russia, have limited or are considering limiting food exports. 4. Despite ample supplies of staple grains and oilseeds in key exporting countries, rising trade disruptions, particularly the implementation of export restrictions, could lead to a fast re-acceleration of food price inflation in 2020. As the Covid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak continues to expand and governments implement increasingly strict measures to contain the spread of the virus, risks of disruptions to the global food supply chain are rising. We note that lockdown measures are now widespread in Developed Markets, but are also likely to be implemented in emerging markets in the coming weeks as the contagion accelerates in those countries. We see risks at all levels of the supply chain, from production to trade. These could impact agriculture prices and may lead to a re-acceleration in food price inflation globally.
