摘要

1. Colombian consumers' food purchasing patterns remain focused on traditional diets, with spending on meat and poultry (29.9% of total food spend in 2019); dairy (15.9%); bread, rice and cereals (15.0%); and fresh vegetables (13.6%) dominating. 2. We note that as more Colombians enter the workforce, the need for convenient and time-saving food products is increasing. The wider proliferation in supermarkets and convenient stores is accelerating this trend. 3. As Colombians' economic wealth increases, consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of the benefits of a balanced diet to maintain or improve their overall health. Colombian consumers are searching for foods that are all natural, have natural flavours or are based on fruits and vegetables 4. Over the past 10 years, Colombia has signed numerous free trade agreements which have given Colombian consumers easier access to a wider variety of cheaper food products. Colombian households are estimated to spend approximately 20.7% of their total household budget on food and non-alcoholic drinks in 2019. Across the Latin America region, Colombia has the fifth lowest spending proportion on food and non-alcoholic drinks, lower than the regional average of 26.8%. Colombians are, however, projected to spend more on food and drink, with its share of total spending going from 19.1% in 2003, to a forecast 21.0% by 2023. Similar to other Latin American countries, Colombia's food and beverages industry is characterised by a high concentration of a few large conglomerates in the food processing sphere.
