We have a similar problem from a different vantagepoint with the article from Steve Himel on the System Index revision. As you'll see, SI was giving curious results on an AM-7000 and, as it turns out, it was because the AM-7000 was so fast, that the test had to be re-designed. Basically, the SI number (or one of them) is a reflection of the computer time as compared with Alpha Microsystems's first CPU board, the AM-100. It took it almost two seconds to run the test (1,918 milliseconds, actually).
