Operads arose independently in algebraic topology and logic in the 60s and 70s although the single unified concept of colored operad as explored by Yau in this book was not fully appreciated until later. There is not a single "most basic" definition of an operad, only variations to which one can add or subtract structure, or internalize in other contexts, replacing sets with spaces or modules for example. There is an essential heart to the concept of operad, however, and this conceptual heart generalizes familiar concepts in algebra in two interesting and distinct yet intertwined ways.
