We all rely on daily weather forecasts and take their general reliability for granted as well as being annoyed or badly affected by its occasional failures. Especially when confronted with extreme weather events such as storms, droughts, or flooding, we might take a deeper interest in the causes of such events and how one can predict them. On a long-term perspective we are also being faced with climate change and its societal consequences. Again we might wonder how climate predictions are being generated and how reliable they are. To find answers to all of these questions we are ultimately forced to look into the science of weather and climate with climate often being paraphrased as the statistics of weather, or in terms of an even simpler phrase: "Climate is what we expect and weather is what we get." While few of us will have the time and muse to become experts on weather and climate, most of us would be content with an easily accessible "glimpse behind the curtain" of the core issues in the modelling and prediction of weather and climate.
